The Big 5 – The Five Biggest Games of August 2016

The Big 5 for August 2016; Let the Summer Drought Come to an End

Last month the dreaded summer drought was in full effect as the Big 5 was one of the thinnest we’d seen in a long time. There were some good games in July sure, but when it came to really big titles they were tough to find. July saw the release of Monster Hunter Generations, Furi, Song of the Deep, Ghostbusters, and I am Setsuna. Out of the Big 5 games, four of them ended up being half-decent and we saw Ghostbusters bring up the rear with one of the worst outings we’d seen in some time. Luckily that’s all behind us now and we can look forward to a MUCH better month in August.

Despite being right smack in the middle of summer August is actually looking fairly good. Where July was starving for even a handful of decent games, August is robust with some great looking AAA titles and a few good indies in there too. In fact, it’s a big enough month that we’re gonna throw one extra title into the Big 5 and we’ll shine the Indie Spotlight on a whopping 7th game as well. Let’s not waste any more time and get into it!

Deus Ex Mankind Divided Live Action HERO

Metroid Prime: Federation Force – Nintendo – Aug 19 (3DS)

Now we know this isn’t the Metroid game everyone really wants but a new Metroid release is always a big deal. Metroid Prime: Federation Force is a co-op first person shooter for the 3DS that’s a spin-off from the Metroid Prime series, where the player assumes the role of a Galactic Federation Marine. Sorry kids, no Samus here! You’ll be able to play with up to three more of your friends as you all work together to complete your objectives. The multiplayer Blast Ball mode will put you into exciting 3v3 soccer style matches where you’ll use your cannon to shoot your ball into the opposing team’s net. It may not be the Metroid game we want, it may not be the Metroid game we deserve, but hey, at least it’s still Metroid.

Attack on Titan – Koei Tecmo – Aug 30 (Multiplatform)

Coming in just at the buzzer for August is the very highly anticipated Attack on Titan. Based on Hajime Isayama’s manga series of the same name it has fans of the series more than a little excited to play it. It’s centred around key moments in the first season of the series with a few new moments thrown in just for the game. Already released in Japan back in February it hits North American shores on August 30th.
