3 Up, 3 Down – The Best (And Worst) Games From July 2016

The Best And Worst From July 2016

We are well into the dog days of the summer gaming lull where everything in the industry seems to slow down to a crawl. There haven’t been many AAA games released over the past couple of months and people seem more pre-occupied with Pokemon Go than anything else going on in the video game world. This past month was an especially rough month for games as we reviewed a pile of games which scored below 60. So it was easy to nail down our worst list for the past month. Yet, there are a few decent games that arrived last month worthy of your attention. So without further delay, let’s get right to the best and the worst from July 2016.

The Best

LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens

LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens hands down is our best game of the month. It is a shining example of how to treat a license. Granted, the game’s prologue starts slow and sloppy as its changing objectives make it seem more like an assortment of mini-games than a cohesive level. Yet the rest of the experience is consistently strong with exciting moments in almost every mission. LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens is treat, so if you are looking for something fun play this summer, look no further.

Prison Architect

We called Prison Architect a breakthrough game in the simulation genre. What Prison Architect did that many sims do not is demonstrate that an engaging story, a massive amount of content and endless replayability is more important than the bare bones idea of simulation and construction. Prison Architect went beyond the boundaries of the simulation genre, proving that a simulation game can be so much more than construction and design. We loved Prison Architect and highly recommend this one for everyone.

Inside

Inside rounds out our top three games from the past month list. Inside is not for everyone, but if you enjoy dark games with a healthy dose of problem-solving and/or you enjoyed Limbo, then you’ll definitely enjoy Inside as well. It is short so this is a game you can easily bang out one rainy afternoon during the summer gaming slow-down period.
