The Three Best and Worst Video Games From September 2021

The Bad

ActRaiser Renaissance

ActRaiser Renaissance was announced and released seemingly out of nowhere, but unfortunately that does not excuse the title from poor execution. This combination of side-scrolling adventure and city-builder ultimately suffers from dated graphics, difficulty spikes, and some really long tower defence sections. In our review, we conclude that the “Renaissance version of ActRaiser is bogged down by motion sickness-inducing framerate drops, ugly prerendered character models, and far too frequent tower defense sections.”

AWAY: The Survival Series

AWAY: The Survival Series is presented as an animal life documentary, capturing that feeling in a pretty unique manner. Unfortunately, the presentation of the game is poor, especially due to its poor controls, bugs, and combat. In our review, we found that “Although clearly built with love and passion, the number of bugs and flawed mechanics make this a frustrating and arduous trek through the wild.”

In Sound Mind

In Sound Mind is a horror title that creates a convincing, potent vision of psychological suffering made manifest. Unfortunately, the puzzles throw off its pacing and the player’s strength plays a part in dulling the horror edge. In our review, we noted that “that creepy storage room seems downright ordinary once you’ve plumbed its depths a dozen or so times.”
