Modern Warfare’s Campaign is Cathartic, not Depressing

Infinity Ward is Taking Modern Warfare’s Story Very Seriously

During a recent interview with Escapist Magazine, Infinity Ward Narrative Director Taylor Kurosaki said the campaign of Call of Duty Modern Warfare is cathartic and realistic but not depressing. The story is about the bonds between people who share a common goal and set out to achievement and how that unfolds. Despite all of the sad moments of loss and tragedy in the campaign, there are also moments of celebration and humor, taking gamers along an emotional roller coaster. Call of Duty Modern Warfare is releasing on October 25th for PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Taking things very seriously, Infinity Ward has spent years with military consultants, cultural consultants and reporters who worked in war zones to portray real war and conflict as accurately as possible. The story is relevant to situations these people confirmed are realistic, which will surely help the campaign succeed in captivating single player fans. “This isn’t about sophomoric shock value; it’s about telling a meaningful story where characters are thrown into conflict and need to resolve it,” Taylor Kurosaki said.

“In the same way that other forms of entertainment deliver the full spectrum of human emotions, the interactive medium should as well,” said Taylor Kurosaki. “The story of Modern Warfare is not depressing, it’s about the bonds between people who share a common goal and set out to achieve it. There are moments of loss, moments of humor and moments of celebration. It’s cathartic and as strange as it is to say this, catharsis is fun.”
