343 Industries Unveils Their Adding More Exploration With Halo Infinite
After their brief E3 presentation for Halo Infinite, Head of Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty explained the developers are looking at ways of adding sandbox exploration to the Halo universe. The 343 Industries team is building a bigger universe with more gameplay scenarios and more areas to explore. The Slipspace engine is allowing the team to do more interesting things with design while redesigning the Halo universe. While discussing the updated design to Halo Infinite, Matt Booty admits Halo 5 felt too busy in design, suggesting Infinite will be more similar to the older Halo titles.
“At once, Halo infinite feels more modern and cleaner. But also I think there are stronger echoes back to the roots of Halo,” said Matt Booty during a recent Game Informer interview. What he seems to be saying is the action set-pieces and level design will be less cluttered but better designed, focusing on quality over quantity. 343 Industries is reluctant to call the universe a sandbox but Halo Infinite will likely include sandbox elements such as less linear level design with some planets acting like more of an open world than what fans of the Halo franchise are used to. Specifically referring to sandbox elements, Matt Booty said “I won’t go so far as to say sandbox because you bring up sandbox and people sort of overload that term with a lot of other things.”
The E3 trailer sent a shiver down the spine of nearly every Halo fan but unfortunately it didn’t show gameplay which they all crave. This interview is a slight glimpse into what 343 Industries is doing with their game design and we look forward to seeing some gameplay ourselves.
