The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from May 2022

The Bad

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is an action JRPG, with town construction at its core. The player explores dungeons, gathers materials, and does their best to make the most perfect town possible. The problem with this premise is that it gets repetitive. The narrative is quite thin, and doesn’t really provide any drive for the player. If you’re the kind of JRPG fan who likes their sidequests, then you might find more enjoyment than most others. Our reviewer found that “You know what you’re getting into with Rising”, and that its draw is quite niche.

Sniper Elite 5

The Sniper Elite series mastered the satisfying feeling of shooting someone in the head (did I just write that). It has yet to figure out anything else. The series added gunplay and melee combat, but they’re just not very good, mechanically. Additionally, the animations and character voices are also laughably bad. Our reviewer “expected the next generation of this franchise. Instead, we got Sniper Elite 4.5.” Even though Sniper Elite 5 is technically the best game in the series, not enough aspects were improved upon.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong

The main draw of Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong, is its world. The World of Darkness game series created an interesting vampire world to explore and experience. Vampire’s plot is about a murder investigation in this world, and features puzzle-solving gameplay, as opposed to the action of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines. Unfortunately, the presentation of this vampire world is not very good. Character models look ugly, voice acting is bad, and the story’s pacing is inconsistent. Our reviewer found “It’s slow and obtuse where it should be visceral and emotional.” A vampire game without enough viscera is a sure-fire disappointment.
