The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games September 2026

3 Up, 3 Down – September 2026

Right now, September feels like it was one of the best months ever for video game releases. Four of the five games in COGconnected’s Top 5 Upcoming Video Games September 2026 scored 90/100 or higher. One even scored a perfect 100, which is incredibly rare for us. Because of this, Control: Resonant, which scored 90, won’t be featured in this month’s 3 Up 3 Down article. So don’t sleep on it! Somehow, all three games in The Good section scored better than that. Without further ado, here are The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games September 2026.

The Good

Onimusha: Way of the Sword

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the first mainline Onimusha game since the PS2! It’s a phenomenal fast-paced action game, with loads of parry options. The story is presented in a cinematic triple-A way that few games have ever topped. Our reviewer concluded “I loved Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and I think it will be celebrated as a modern action classic”. The game scored 92/100 which makes it easy inclusion in The Good section of The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games September 2026.

Silent Hill: Townfall

Silent Hill: Townfall is another successful entry in the Silent Hill franchise, since its triumphant return in 2023. It’s the first full game to have the first-person view teased by P.T. and The Short Message. Like Silent Hill f, the story is set outside of the US town of Silent Hill. Our reviewer concluded “Each aspect coalesces into a relentless experience that stands as another confident evolution of the legendary horror series.” Silent Hill: Townfall scored 91/100, and somehow, it’s the lowest scoring game in The Good section of The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games September 2026.

Marvel’s Wolverine

COGconnected scored Marvel’s Wolverine 100/100. It’s the spiritual successor to Insomniac’s Spider-Man games. While it doesn’t have open world web swinging, Marvel’s Wolverine has brutal, visceral combat and a phenomenal cinematic story. Our reviewer concluded “Marvel’s Wolverine is a tight, focused experience that never lets up or slows down more than it absolutely has to.” Marvel’s Wolverine is a game of the year contender, and obvious inclusion in The Good section of The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games September 2026.

The Bad

Hot Wheels: Infinite Rush

Hot Wheels: Infinite Rush is the successor to the Hot Wheels: Unleashed games. It has the same core gameplay, but changes up the format to an open world. It’s a fun arcade racer, but lacks features and depth. Our reviewer warned “Players looking for the polished arcade-racing depth associated with something like Mario Kart… should probably keep their expectations in check.” Hot Wheels: Infinite Rush didn’t score horribly, but still scored low enough to land it in The Bad section of The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games September 2026.

EA Sports NHL 27

EA Sports 27 is the biggest disappointment of September. As the premiere hockey game, it’s got to be some players’ most anticipated game of the year. The game has major improvements to past entries’ graphics and UI. Other than that, it’s mostly just an updated roster. Our reviewer concluded “the second the puck hits the ice, you’re essentially playing NHL 26 dressed up under hot new lighting effects.” EA Sports NHL 27 is the lowest scoring game in The Bad section of The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games September 2026.

Rivage

Rivage is a first-person puzzle game that takes place on a space station. It has an emphasis on narrative, and a variety of puzzles. Unfortunately, our reviewer found the gameplay frustrating. They concluded “Most puzzles are well designed, but initiating these can be harder than the puzzles themselves. Paired with the poorly signaled objectives, you may have to wander and re-loop due to a lack of direction.” Rivage scored 62/100, which isn’t bad, but it was still low enough to land it in The Bad section of The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games September 2026.
