10 Best Nintendo Switch Video Games of 2021

5. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury

Super Mario 3D World was one of the last great Wii U games to be ported to the Switch. Its gameplay is a synthesis of the linear platforming challenges of the New Super Mario Bros. games, and the controls and feel of the mainline 3D Mario games. The added Bowser’s Fury was a mini-version of the world exploring gameplay we’ve loved from Super Mario Odyssey. The whole package is a must-have for fans of gaming’s greatest franchise.

4. Little Nightmares II

Little Nightmares II is a 2.5D puzzle platformer, which is a genre that was popularized by titles like Limbo during the PS3 generation. The game stands apart from its contemporaries because of its horror-soaked atmosphere. It’s a story prequel to the original game, so newcomers don’t need to fret over jumping right in. Over one million survival horror and puzzle platformer fans unite in agreement that Little Nightmares II is a must play Switch title.

3. Shin Megami Tensei V

Some Switch owners saw Shin Megami Tensei V as a system seller when it was announced along with the console in 2016. Since that announcement, five years have passed, and JRPG fans across the world agree that the wait was worth it. Do you love the idea of a monster collecting JRPG, but feel like Pokemon is stylized for babies? If you answered yes, then Shin Megami Tensei V is the game you want to play.

2. Monster Hunter Rise

While PS4 owners got Monster Hunter World, Switch owners got Monster Hunter Rise. This was the game that was the true successor to the 3DS’ Monster Hunter Generations. The fans of those Nintendo handheld titles rejoiced as Monster Hunter Rise was exactly what they were hoping for. No Worlds, no Stories, just a return to form.

1. Metroid Dread

Nintendo had Switch owners looking forward to Metroid Prime 4, but in 2021 they revealed that they were secretly developing a fifth 2D game in the franchise. Metroid Dread was both announced and released by Nintendo in 2021, and it has been universally beloved. Just the game’s existence has first party Nintendo fans chomping at the bit to discover what other retro treats may lay in store for them. 2021 was the year Nintendo reminded gamers that they hadn’t lost what put the Metroid in Metroidvania.
