A New Star Wars Game Is in the Works

Amy Hennig Is Working on a New Star Wars Collaboration

A new Star Wars game is in the works. Amy Hennig confirmed that she is heading the development of a new collaboration between Lucasfilm Games and Skydance New Media.

“I have often described how seeing Star Wars in 1977 essentially rewired my 12-year-old brain shaping my creative life and future indelibly,” Hennig said. “I am elated to be working with Lucasfilm Games again to tell interactive stories in this galaxy that I love.”

Fans of the franchise are well aware that Hennig’s Star Wars project at EA’s Visceral Studios was cancelled in 2017. It was a narrative-focused single player action adventure game with the name Ragtag.

Hennig’s recent announcement suggested that the upcoming project is going to be “a narrative-driven action adventure game featuring an original story in the Star Wars galaxy.”

Her team marketed her then-cancelled project as “an original Star Wars story with new characters, locations, tech, creatures.” The approach they took for the game was pretty much similar with what they used with Uncharted. This was the PlayStation series that she worked on during her time at Naughty Dog.

If you are trying to recreate that pulp action adventure experience, you need to deconstruct the films,” she added. “So you know how to reconstruct them in an interactive context as gameplay.”

Unfortunately for Hennig and her team, EA ultimately decided to move away from this type of game style. Vice President Patrick Soderlund wanted to give gamers “a broader experience that allows for more variety and player agency.” A lot of fans assumed that they were referring to an open world game, probably with a greater focus on microtransactions.

However, it would seem that Hennig and Lucasfilm share the same views on this front. “Their vision for making narrative-driven and engaging interactive entertainment makes this collaboration very exciting,” said Lucasfilm Games Vice President Douglas Reilly.
