Ubisoft Is Looking at Other Studios While Tackling Their Challenges
During a recent Q&A, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot claimed that the developer will be looking at acquiring other studios carefully and that they’re facing some unique challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While the studio still intends to release five big games between 2020 and 2021, the challenges they’ve been presented with may slow development. This could also impact which studios and how many studios the developer acquires and merges. The upcoming Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will be cross-generational, releasing for Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4, PS5, PC and Google Stadia towards the tail end of the year.
“We are studying carefully the market these days and if there are opportunities we will take them,” said Yves Guillemot. “At the same time we have also to tackle these new challenges so it’s taking a little bit of our time. For sure, we’ll look at it carefully.” It’ll be interesting to see which studios Ubisoft is looking to merge with but these turbulent times may make acquisitions a little harder than they would normally be. During their quarterly financial briefing, Ubisoft mentioned the other ways the COVID-19 pandemic might affect their business going forward, suggesting a slower process than usual as the pandemic continues. They intend to release five AAA titles in the next two years but they’re also preparing for the possibility of delays with several developers working from home. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was recently showed off during the Inside Xbox Series X games showcase where Ubisoft joined many other developers with announcements that may have otherwise been at E3 2020.
