Bungie Removes Text Chat from Destiny 2 Due to Exploit

Bungie’s Got some Work to do in Destiny 2

So apparently you can just crash someone’s game in Destiny 2, just by sending a message in text chat. No big deal, right?

Ok maybe it’s a slight problem. Apparently some Destiny 2 players found an exploit in the game’s systems, deploying it most often in PvP settings. Without diving too deep into the specifics, players could overload a message beyond the intended character limit, send that off in a private message to a player, and crash their game. Players had already developed some counter-measures by the time Bungie shut down text chat, but as of writing, a true fix has not been discovered.

There is no released timescale for when Destiny 2 will see the return of text chat. It certainly depends on how long it takes to patch this exploit, but the severity of the issue is something only Bungie can know. Until they tell us after the fact, of course, but that might not even happen.

At the very least, be glad it’s not a remote code execution exploit. Other games have had an issue where players could deploy malicious code through text chat, and that sort of thing demands a serious response. A sudden game crash is annoying, sure, but it could be a lot worse.

Has this exploit affected you? Were you on the receiving end of a crash, or are impacted by the loss of text chat? Say your piece in the comments down below, we’d love to hear from you!
