Tencent and Spec Ops Developer Yager Join Forces

Spec Ops: The Line Developer and Tencent Working Together

Yager recently confirmed that Chinese gaming company Tencent invested in their company, but that the studio will continue to function independently. The investment of an undisclosed amount will apparently help the developer expand and enhance their scope of business. Tencent had a successful 2019 and it’s likely that investing into developers such as Yager and PlatinumGames will continue to keep them successful throughout 2020. Spec Ops: The Line is available for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC now and it’s backwards compatible on the Xbox One.

Yager Spec Ops

“We’re humbled to join the line-up of Tencent partners which reads like a games industry Who’s Who,” said Yager CEO Timo Ulmann. The investment from Tencent “will greatly enhance the scope of our business, not just by getting access to Tencent’s network and resources but by tapping the vast industry know-how Tencent possesses.” Yager games have historically reviewed well but sold poorly so it’s likely that Tencent’s investment will help the company with exposure via Tencent’s streaming service, the Epic Games Store, etc.

Tencent has been expanding the amount of developers they work with recently and has been met with success with titles such as Call of Duty mobile and PUBG mobile. The developer most recently created a multiplayer game called The Cycle and it’ll be interesting to see if Tencent will contribute towards a mobile version of the game. Tencent’s recent investment into PlatinumGames has allowed the studio to self-publish some of their own games, so it’ll likely help Yager flourish in a similar way now that they’ve received their backing.
