NBA 2K20 Slam Dunk’s NPD Sales Records

NBA 2K20 Breaks Sports Franchise Records and Carries 2019

According to the NPD group, NBA 2K20 not only outsold the competition in the month of September, but it surpassed titles such as Mortal Kombat 11 and Borderlands 3 to become 2019’s best selling game. This sales milestone for 2K doesn’t just cap off a good year for them as NBA 2K20 also had the best launch month sales for any sports franchise to date. NBA 2K20 is available on Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, PC and Mobile now.

The top-selling games of September 2019 according to the NPD are as followed:

    1. 1 – NBA 2K20
    1. 2 – Borderlands 3
    1. 3 – FIFA 20
    1. 4 – The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
    1. 5 – Madden NFL 20
    1. 6 – Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Breakpoint
    1. 7 – Gears 5
    1. 8 – Code Vein
    1. 9 – NHL 20
    1. 10 – Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
    1. 11 – Minecraft
    1. 12 – Grand Theft Auto V
    1. 13 – Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
    1. 14 – Spyro Reignited Trilogy
    1. 15 – Red Dead Redemption II
    1. 16 – Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege
    1. 17 – Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville
    1. 18 – Marvel’s Spider-Man
    1. 19 – Catherine
    1. 20 – The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

A key take away from this list right off the bat is that Take-Two Interactive carries the top two spots, so they clearly tapped into the gaming market in September. Grand Theft Auto 5 is still selling well despite first releasing in 2013 thanks to Rockstar constantly evolving GTA Online. EA also appears several times on the list, proving that their sports titles may not be as successful as NBA 2K20, but they’re consistent sellers. The underdogs in this picture are Sony and Ubisoft  with only one and two games on the list respectively.

The Nintendo Switch remains the best-selling piece of hardware in 2019 and that likely won’t be changing considering the lineup of games Nintendo has set to launch later this year and their planned 2020 releases. Apparently, video game spending is down as a whole 8% compared to September 2018, leading us to wonder where the gamers have gone and if they’re just ready for the next generation of consoles.
