Double Fine’s Psychonauts 2 Delayed Until Next Year

You Didn’t Have to Be Psychic to Know This Was Coming

Double Fine’s follow up to their 2005 game Psychonauts has had a long and turbulent road getting to this point in its development. Its most recent change was Double Fine’s acquisition by Microsoft announced last month. Though this is ultimately a good thing, according to Tim Schafer, it may be part of the reason having Psychonauts 2 delayed until next year. That does not mean that it would a negative side effect, just that Microsoft might have a different view of a 2019 release than the previous publisher Starbreeze.

Psychonauts 2 Delayed

Yesterday, on the Psychonauts 2 crowdfunding page on fig.co, the new 2020 release was announced. The way it is worded sounds like the decision to push it back was influenced by Microsoft, but a delayed release date is never a sign of a lesser quality game. “We’re now targeting next year for release. We know it’s always disappointing when you have to wait a bit longer, but we also know that you are an amazing, supportive bunch, who – just like us – want the game to be as good as possible. So we’re hopeful you’ll understand! <3” Perhaps now that it is being published by Microsoft, a 2019 release might have it competing with another Microsoft title. In that case, spreading out the games’ releases would mean more $$$.

Of course, we may never know exactly why Psychonauts 2 is being pushed back. In other Double Fine news, their upcoming game RAD is available for pre-order with bonuses such as a Joystick Bat and different Character Sytles. RAD is coming out on August 20th for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
