Top Releases of October 2020
We’ve finally made it. Heading into November 2020 felt like ages for several reasons. After 7 years, we are finally at the release of the next generation of console gaming, featuring the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X (read our hands-on here). Although some games were pushed out of November, such as Cyberpunk 2077, gamers will have a wide variety of games to choose from.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla – PC, PS4, PS5, X1, XSX – Nov 10
Though somehow it doesn’t feel like it, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (read our preview here) is the first Assassin’s Creed game since late 2018’s Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Once again, Ubisoft is changing the setting of the game, putting players in the role of a Viking raider in the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. Still an open-world game, Valhalla’s formula is like that of contemporary Assassin’s Creed games, featuring a hint of RPG mechanics. If you’ve played the series recently, you know what to expect. One notable change with regards to the AC formula is that the game has replaced traditional side quests with world events, and we’re quite excited to see how that works out.
Godfall – PC, PS5 – Nov 12
Godfall is an action-RPG that might be best described as a looter-slasher with a gameplay loop that involves melee combat, upgrading gear, and doing it all over again. Self-described as a “tinkerer’s dream”, we can definitely see why based on what we’ve seen of the progression system. Besides that, the game just looks like a good time, with the ability to play with others in a drop-in cooperative mode. Though the PS5 is launching with a couple other big games, Godfall could be that sleeper hit in November.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon – PC, PS4, X1, XSX – Nov 10
Launching alongside the Xbox Series X (as well as PC, PS4, and Xbox One), Yakuza: Like a Dragon (read our preview here) is changing things up massively for the latest game in the series. Aside from featuring a protagonist not named Kazuma Kiryu, Yakuza: Like a Dragon is taking its combat system turn-based. Along with this turn-based battle system is a job system, making Yakuza: Like a Dragon one of the more interesting RPGs releasing this year. We are looking forward to spending a Yakuza game away from Kabukicho, at least for most of the time.
