Google Stadia’s Controller Requires USB-C to Play on PC and Mobile
When Google Stadia releases, the controller will only be wireless when playing through the Chromecast Ultra. According to a Google Community Manager on Reddit, if you’re playing on your computer or a mobile device, you’ll need to connect the controller with a USB-C cable. Stadia was supposed to bypass local hardware, connecting directly to your game running in the cloud via Wi-Fi to make going from one device to another seamless but this won’t be the case for the platform at launch. Google Stadia Founder’s and Premiere Editions include the required Chromecast Ultra and they both release worldwide on November 19th.
After promising one thing about the controller easily pairing with other devices then having the platform release without that support makes us worry in what other ways Google has set unattainable expectations. Apparently Google’s controller won’t be able to wirelessly stream game audio to your Bluetooth headphones or gaming headsets when it launches either but we hope this is changed in the future as bluetooth support is essential for gaming.
“For wireless gameplay, this is limited to Chromecast Ultra. When plugged in via USB-C cable, the Stadia Controller acts as a standard USB HID controller and may work on other platforms depending on the game and setup,” said the Google Community Manager. “At launch, if you’re looking to access Stadia on computers, tablets, and phones, you’ll need to connect your controller via USB. Sorry for the confusion.” Google says they want to focus on getting TV play right first, as they see that as the core of their business.
