xCloud Launching With Halo 5, Gears 5, Sea of Thieves and More
Microsoft is officially launching Project xCloud Public Preview registration, currently available in the United States, United Kingdom and Korea. The launch lineup includes Gears 5, Killer Instinct, Halo 5: Guardians, Sea of Thieves and more classic Microsoft exclusives. Gamers will be able to register for the xCloud Public Preview here as Microsoft phases in more participants over time. You will need a Android 6.0 or better device to stream the Microsoft titles to your mobile device. The xCloud Public Preview is expected to begin rolling invites out in October.
More opportunities will open up over time because of the phases Microsoft has planned for the xCloud Public Preview so if you don’t get an invite right away, stay patient! Microsoft is looking for feedback as well as statistics, server stress tests, etc. from the public so before the beta goes live, we expect a large portion of those who sign up for the Preview will get their hands on the gaming cloud streaming service. Gamers will need Bluetooth 4.0 or better on their device and a Xbox One wireless controller and Microsoft account are both required to get started. A stable wireless connection is also heavily recommended as the service runs on WiFi and mobile networks, but we expect that game streaming via a mobile network will be costly unless you have an unlimited data cap. Microsoft has partnered with T-Mobile in the US and Vodaphone in the UK so if you’re a dedicated Xbox gamer, you might want to switch to one of these networks.
We aren’t expecting this service to immediately catch fire, but cloud game streaming is going mainstream between Project xCloud and Google Stadia. It’s definitely impressive to get a game like Gears 5 or Sea of Thieves to work on a mobile phone though and Microsoft should be commended for that.
