Mega Evolutions Arrive in Pokemon Go

Niantic Has Brought Mega Evolutions to Pokemon Go

Niantic Labs has finally brought Mega evolutions to Pokemon Go. Mega Evolution is achieved with a new resource called Mega Energy that is earned by battling Mega-Evolved Pokemon in raids. So far, only Beedrill, Blastoise, Charizard, and Venusaur can Mega evolve, but it’s likely that more Pokemon will unlock the ability as Niantic adds to Pokemon Go. Only one Mega-Evolved pokémon can be held at once, just like only one Pokemon could mega evolve per battle in Pokemon X and Y. Pokemon Go is available for mobile devices right now, with Sword and Shield available for Nintendo Switch owners.

Mega evolving Beedrill, Blastoise, Charizard, or Venusaur will drastically increase their strength, making them important to defeating raid battles or capturing enemy gym’s. A new Pokedex feature makes tracking which Pokemon you’ve Mega Evolved in the past a lot easier. Once Pokemon Go gamers have Mega Evolved a specific Pokemon a single time, less Mega energy will be required the next time that Pokemon is Mega evolved. With the increased power of Mega Pokemon, it’s likely that they’ll play an integral role in high-level Pokemon Go play.

Niantic will be holding various Mega evolution themed events throughout September, and there’ll also be a new special research questline in the game that makes Mega evolving your first Pokemon a little bit easier. While gamers are already using Mega energy to evolve their original Kanto starter Pokemon, it’s currently unknown when the special research questline and subsequent events will kickoff. While it may be some time before Dynamax Pokemon are added to Pokemon Go, it’ll be fun to Mega evolve our Beedrill, Blastoise, Charizard, and Venusaur in the near future.
