PlayStation 5: The Top 5 Announcements That Surprised Us

Top 5 PlayStation 5 Surprise Announcements

Sony has wrapped up its first official PlayStation 5 event with an explosive presentation, offering gameplay and trailers for all ages, introducing new and returning properties for the future of PS5 (including finally letting us see what the console looks like: spoiler, it is absolutely gorgeous) There are absolutely a few titles which we knew were a given for the gaming giant that were confirmed such as a new Gran Turismo, Spider-Man, and Horizon game to say the least but more than a few announcements took us by surprise. These are the top 5 announcements that surprised us and caught us completely off guard for PlayStation 5.

5. Sackboy: A Big Adventure

This one could have easily placed anywhere on this list because the much-beloved title character of Sackboy had sadly faded from our memory. In a time when games thrived based on mascot, Sackboy was unique in the Little Big Planet series for his ability to dress up as anyone. He was the ultimate stand-in and now he is off on his own bright and colorful adventure. Sackboy’s return was entirely unexpected but definitely not unwelcome. Seeing his return is like bumping into an old friend and going out for a drink to catch up.

4. Ratchet and Clank: A Rift Apart

Getting a delightful remaster as well as a short film, Ratchet and Clank have been a rather small but unforgettable staple. The duo has had numerous wild adventures but much like Sackboy, they somehow fell to the wayside. Clearly there was interest in seeing the adventuring mechanic and his tiny robot friend return after their remaster, but a brand new adventure – and one which so clearly pushes next gen to do things we have not seen before – was only a dream until now. Not only is the frantic, over the top energy and combat still here but it has clearly stepped up a notch and reignited a spark for that kind of zany fun we haven’t had in a while. We walked into this conference expecting doom and gloom realism with hard hitting narrative and instead are reminded of what brought us to video games in the first place: childish, delightful fun.

3. Hitman 3

That trailer was truly chilling and exhilarating. It pierced the mark of what it must feel like to be in the sights of Agent 47. The Hitman series is a much loved franchise by its die-hard fans for both its methodical nature and the weird and unexpectedly wacky ways you can eliminate your target. The franchise is truly brilliant and one that doesn’t get as much love as it deserves, but having it announce now on the PS5 should tell you that Sony is banking on Hitman’s draw to get that DualSense controller in your hand. The presentation of Hitman 3 was a piece of art from start to finish and we couldn’t be more excited.

2. Demon Souls

If ever, during this entire presentation, a reveal caught us so off-guard out of left field it had to be the return of Demon Souls. Originally released 11 years ago, Demon Souls was a legendary entry in fantasy skill based games and is the predecessor to the iconic Dark Souls franchise. It’s stunningly over the top graphics and insane details floored us as we couldn’t imagine what this truly epic new game could be. And then the smoke cleared and we were greeted with the title card. This critically acclaimed game was always remembered fondly but not once did we expect to see it return.

1. Resident Evil 8: Village

My god, we had hoped another Resident Evil entry would be on the way sometime but we were not ready for what RE8 has shown us. The fear and horror you know and love is all right there, but the few moments of rich gameplay and atmosphere we got to experience was truly breathtaking and unsettling. Even as the word “Village” flashed on screen it was easy to assume this was merely a new IP as we saw no evidence of typical zombies, but instead hints at an almost Dracula-esque experience – not to mention what appeared to be some form of werewolf. This could be Resident Evil’s foray into territory not unlike RE4, and if we are stepping away from zombies and into a new cursed town full of mutants and monsters, we are all on board.
