Pokemon Sword & Shield Sell Another 200,000 in Japan

Pokemon Sword & Shield Still Remain Atop Famitsu Sales Charts

According to the most recent Famitsu sales charts, Pokemon Sword & Shield remain the dominant software sellers. The ghostbusting Luigi’s Mansion 3 holds a strong second place while Ring Fit Adventure rounds out the rest of the top three software sellers despite Nintendo struggling to keep up with the demand of the fitness title. The Nintendo Switch and PS4  have sold more successfully last week than the one before, hinting at some likely Holiday gifts Japanese gamers can look forward to. All of the top three software sellers being Switch exclusives shows the dominance of the platform in Japan and the success of Ring Fit Adventure shows fitness games aren’t a niche that disappeared with the Wii Fit or the more recent Fitness Boxing.

Pokemon Sword & Shield Trailer

The most recent Famitsu sales charts show no new titles being released so there are several familiar titles. For example, is anyone surprised that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is in the top ten sellers for the week? Most notable is the sales gap between each of the top three titles, showing a big step down from Pokemon Sword & Shield to Luigi’s Mansion and another large step down from that to Ring Fit Adventure. The following are the top software sellers in Japan last week (lifetime sales in brackets).

  1. Pokemon Sword & Shield 201,838 – (2,224,881)
  2. Luigi’s Mansion 3 34,122 – (319,297)
  3. Ring Fit Adventure 16,128 – (328,511)
  4. Minecraft Switch Edition 15,335 – (1,038,091)
  5. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: Tokyo 2020 15,159 – (77,180)
  6. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 14,623 – (2,557,915)
  7. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 13,959 – (3,362,447)
  8. Super Mario Party 13,872 – (1,177,650)
  9. Super Mario Maker 2 12,284 – (720,268)
  10. Fishing Spirits: Nintendo Switch Edition 11,521 – (243,913)

The success of Fishing Spirits has been somewhat underplayed as selling nearly 250,000 units in Japan is nothing to scoff at. We’re glad to see so much Mario in the top ten software sales and that Pokemon Sword & Shield still remain dominant. The following are Famitsu’s hardware sales for last week (prior week sales in brackets):

  1. Nintendo Switch 188,501 – (186,763)
  2. PS4 41,401  – (8,626)
  3. Nintendo 3DS 4,074 – (1,580)
