Phil Spencer Says Streaming Is a Technology of Convenience

During a recent interview with Game Informer, Phil Spencer gave details about streaming, Game Pass, xCloud and more. While expressing enthusiasm for game streaming due to the convenience, Spencer admits that playing locally is still the best way to game. The executive vice-president of gaming at Microsoft also emphasized how many studios the company acquired towards the end of the Xbox One’s lifespan and how many exclusives are on the Microsoft horizon for Game Pass. Though not giving any details on the Xbox Series X, Phil Spencer claims it has tangible capabilities gamers will see and feel.

“The best place to play is locally; I’ll say that flat-out,” said Phil Spencer. “Streaming is a technology of convenience. It’s a technology of choice when you’re away from your console and you want to play.” Microsoft seems is apparently all about letting gamers play how they want to with the upcoming xCloud streaming service while Game Pass provides them with a plethora of titles to choose from. “When we started Game Pass, we thought the adjective gamers were going to love about Game Pass was ‘value.’ What it’s really turned into is a community that wants a curated set of great games.” This has provided gamers a platform to try titles they might not otherwise have tried and fall in love with new genres of games.

“The gamers don’t buy things because we need them to buy it; they don’t do things because we need them to go do them,” said Phil Spencer. “They do things because it matches what they need, and sometimes, frankly, what gamers want in the near term isn’t always the best business decision for us. But being inside Microsoft, I think because it’s a big company, we take a long-term perspective on things.” This long-term approach apparently encapsulates their acquisitions phase, Game Pass and xCloud in particular.
