After Years of Missteps, Is Xbox Back on Track?
Microsoft was riding high in the mid-2000s, surpassing Sony as the most sought-after home console. With its focus on bringing players together through its solid online component, shining a light on the indie sector with its Summer of Arcade initiative and a slew of exciting exclusives, many assumed that Microsoft would lead the next generation of consoles.
This completely changed by the time the Xbox One hit the market. Alienating its core demographic, Microsoft had to address numerous concerns with DRM and anti-consumer policies, making it reverse its policies. In addition to the mistrust, a lack of exclusives also led to the tech giants slipping further from their competition, allowing PlayStation to overtake its rivals. Further missteps have widened the gulf with Microsoft releasing its exclusives on other consoles, closing incredible studios and increasing the price of its one appealing feature: Game Pass. It was looking bleak, but now there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

Xbox Finally Has Games Again
Although a vast array of stunning titles were revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase, the fact that exclusives were back was definitely the biggest news. Gears of War: E-Day looks incredible and could be a catalyst for players to leap back to Xbox. With the exciting Clockwork Revolution, also an exclusive, it appears that Microsoft is preparing to once again compete with Sony.
While many of the landmark titles are still due to land on PlayStation throughout 2026 and early 2027, will everything after this date be an exclusive? Only time will tell, but if Microsoft is serious about competing, then making the Bethesda and Activision games exclusive will help shift players.

Game Pass Revival
Game Pass was the best deal in gaming. For a monthly fee, you could dip into a ton of titles, getting access to all exclusives. After restructuring the tiers, this hiked the price, resulting in a mass exodus of the service. The new president of Xbox, Asha Sharma, is doing all she can to fix this blunder, already reevaluating the price and bolstering the content. While it’s not the steal that it used to be, it’s still a good deal that could entice players back.

A Daring Project
The direction that Xbox was heading was frightening for fans. What was the point of sticking with the console when you could play everything on other consoles and also enjoy their exclusives? The ‘This is an Xbox’ campaign trivialised the idea of needing a console, so why purchase one? It seemed like Xbox stopped fighting the Console War. Asha Sharma has changed this. Project Helix is reportedly giving players a choice through a more consumer‑friendly approach, letting them dual‑boot, a move that could mark a seismic shift for the company. A bold step like this might be exactly what brings gamers back to Xbox.

The Future is Bright
The Xbox brand holds a lot of power. Even with several missteps, there’s reverence and nostalgia for the company. PlayStation is leading the industry, but Xbox could easily tempt players back. Many have been disappointed with the lack of exclusives from Sony in the current generation and Microsoft needs to capitalise on this. Building trust with gamers during the twilight of the Series S/X and then entering the next phase with a bang could reshape the current market landscape.
Can Xbox reclaim its core market, or does it need to evolve into something completely different?
