COG’s Top 6 Games from May 2015 by Review Score

May was a busy month for us as we reviewed over 25 games. In what is traditionally a slow month, many fantastic and not-so fantastic games hit retail. Some of these games might have slipped under your radar as you were slaying Griffins or kicking ass with Kung Lao. As a result, we decided to round-up the top six games from last month in one handy little list. We sorted them by review score because we couldn’t think of any other fair way to rank them.

Enjoy!

(6) Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim Review – A Charming Remaster of an RPG Classic

Score: 82

What We Said: “Ys VI still has its original charm and classic elements to make it a timeless game. It’s a simple and not overly complicated action RPG which makes it an easy game to experience and love. While its simplicity and common RPG elements does not make it stand out excessively from its competitors, it stays in its safe zone and continues its formula. With the new features available exclusive to this PC release, it has something in store for fans of the game to appreciate and also new comers to experience. If you’re in need for a simple and enjoyable RPG full of exploration and loveable characters, look no further.”

(5) Project CARS Review – A Racer Worth Parking in Your Gaming Library

Score: 85

What We Said: “Project Cars occupies a unique bridging point between arcade racers and full out simulation games. The good news for hardcore racers is that the game’s fuel mixture is graded with a performance that pushes Project Cars more to the sim side of the starting grid. The game’s legacy could very well be one where it becomes the feeder sim for those gamers looking to make the transition from console racers to the more realistic sims available on PCs. Project Cars is a total racing game package with that magical quality that lets you get into the zone to become “Zen,” piling up laps and have hours fly by before you realize it. This is a promising start with Project Cars offering one of the most fully featured racers at launch date. Further refinement and expansion on these features and FFB could turn this into a real gem. Project Cars is definitely worth parking in your game racing library.”

(4) Wolfenstein: The Old Blood Review – Chaotic Nazi Killing Carnage at Its Best

Score: 87

What We Said: “Fans of Wolfenstein: The New Order can proceed to download this standalone expansion with confidence. For the price, you get a rich shooter jam packed with about as much reckless Nazi killing carnage to fill the cockles of your heart. It’s visually superb and about as much mindless fun you will have all year. Wolfenstein: The Old Blood doesn’t reinvent the franchise or really stray from what made The New Order a success but taking this abbreviated journey with B.J. Blazkowicz put a smile on my face from beginning to end.”

(3) Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster Review – The Definitive Version to Experience the World of Spira

Score: 88

What We Said: “Although Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster on the PS3 already did a superb job in bringing back two classic games and adding extra content, the new PS4 counterpart has managed to outdo it. That being said, while the definitive version resides on the PS4, if you already own the PS Vita or PS3 version it is a pricey upgrade for only a few new features and a visual upgrade. If you haven’t gotten your hands on a copy of Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster yet and have a PS4, don’t hesitate on experiencing two classic games upgraded and fit for this day and age on Sony’s current-gen console.”

(2) Galactic Civilizations III Review – A Stellar, Life Sucking 4X Strategy Game

Score: 88

What We Said: “Overall, fans of the 4X genre are absolutely going to want to pick up Galactic Civilizations III. It’s in-depth, addictive, time consuming and a helluva lot of fun. Whether you want to be a money maker, a military genius or a peacekeeper, you can do it. With very few drawbacks and some very interesting game modes still coming, this game is going to be a life suck. Whether it be campaign, multiplayer or simply an ‘insane’ size map and all the races including the ones you create, you will really enjoy throwing whole days away on galactic domination.”

(1) The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Review – Much More Than Sex on a Unicorn

Score: 90

What We Said: “There is no question The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt delivers a superb ‘Triple A’ RPG experience. Featuring some of the best story telling we have seen so far this year and an unforgettable, dynamic and vast open world, Witcher 3 stands as a must own for not only fans of the franchise but those looking for rich experience they can soak 100+ hours into. Some of the glitches, bugs and other small annoyances hamper the experience but the pros outweigh the cons as the Witcher 3 is a journey worth taking.”
