CD Projekt RED’s Marcin Iwiński (The Witcher 3) Shows that Appreciating the Customer Matters

News today from the team at CDPR states that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has sold a whopping four million copies. Wow, four million copies… that’s no small number and no small feat for the small developer out of Poland. A relative unknown when they published the first Witcher game nearly 9 years ago they have become one of the most respected developers in the business built largely on the back of that same franchise. With The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt scoring unanimous praise from media outlets and fans worldwide the companies co-founder, Marcin Iwiński penned a quick open letter to gamers to tell them just how much he appreciates their support. CDPR has lots on the horizon, with more than a few gamers curious about when we’ll hear more about Cyberpunk 2077, but in the meantime we can bask in the fact that we like them and they like us. They really, really like us!

Dear Gamers,

May 19th was a crucial date for all of us here at CD PROJEKT RED — we released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, our open world role-playing game that we had been hard at work on for over 3 years. Since day one, you have given us tons of positive feedback and support — the sheer volume of emails we’ve gotten since launch simply congratulating us for our efforts is both epic and heartwarming, and I wish every developer comes to have such a fantastic community. In terms of media reception, we’re really humbled by the scores the game has received all around the world. With an average of 90+ on every platform, Wild Hunt is our dream coming true.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank the four million gamers worldwide who bought The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in the first two weeks from launch. Four million RPG fans spending their hard-earned money on our game is a sign that we did something right, and you can be sure that we’ll harness all that positive energy and make the upcoming expansions worthy of the grand adventure that you’re telling us Wild Hunt already is! Until then, keep on enjoying Wild Hunt, do not forget to grab your weekly set of free DLCs, and stay tuned for constant updates and enhancement to the game we are continuously working on.

Dandelion once said to Geralt that the world is changing, the sun is setting, and vodka’s running out — go, play, and have fun!

All the best,
Marcin Iwiński
Co-founder, CD PROJEKT RED

Well, I don’t know about you but that gave me the warm and fuzzies. Any developer worth their salt should appreciate every last copy sold and the person behind that purchase. Hard earned money given to them for a product that they continue to support and improve by a real person who probably could have spent that money elsewhere. If anything it could be said that more developers could use this as their own personal ‘golden rule’. Time and again gamers have been left out in the cold with unsupported and faulty games after dropping from $60 up to $100 on a product and that“s quite simply not right.

The Witcher 3 hasn’t even had a perfect launch but the continued support and addressing of issues from the team at CDPR has prevented the gaming community from turning negative (NOT THAT WE EVER DO THAT, AM I RIGHT?) and has shown them that their concerns are important to the developer. With weekly free DLC on the way, massive DLC expansions and the constant tweaking to improve the game it seems like CDPR is the big developer with small developer heart. Let’s hope it stays that way.
