Final Fatnasy 16 Will Not Be Turn-Based or Open-World
Final Fantasy 16 fans already know that the game’s battle system will not use the franchise’s traditional turn-based menus. According to Producer Naoki Yoshida, they had a reason why they decided to change this.
“I am from a generation that grew up with command and turn-based RPGs,” Yoshida said. “For the past decade or so, I have seen quite a number of opinions saying, ‘I do not understand the attraction of selecting commands in video games.’”
It seems that it is because of feedback like this that the Final Fantasy 16 team decided to use a real-time battle system instead. It looks like their focus is to appeal to the younger generation of gamers. “This opinion is only increasing,” he added. “Particularly with younger audiences who do not typically play RPGs.”
Turn-based games in the Final Fantasy franchise started with the inception of the series back in 1987. The idea came from tabletop RPGs. Furthermore, the tradition was also popular in the years before that. Many fans have continued to play since then. However, it is worth noting that there are also many players who were born in the 30-plus years that proceeded.
Despite the studio’s desire to appeal to a much younger audience, Final Fantasy 16 continues to have a Mature rating. This is most likely to the type of story line that Square Enix wants to tell with the game.
Final Fantasy 16 is also not going to be open world. According to Yoshida, they “want to release this game as soon as possible.” With that said, they need more time if they gave it an open world design. “If we had a development period of about 15 years, we may have had the opportunity of challenging ourselves with an open world,” he said.
