Website Launched to Ensure Gaming Highlights in Ottawa
When people think of video games in Canada, they may think of Vancouver, Edmonton, Montreal, and Toronto. But there’s a gaming community in Ottawa, the Canadian capital. And there are some that want to bring that to the spotlight, not just for the press, but for local gatherings.
Currently, the website has a calendar, lists developers in the area, and offers a resource page for those who want to get an education in the gaming area and connect with organizations in the Ottawa area.
It is small, but it does make sense, as the site is only run by four volunteers at this time- Paige Marincak, Mathieu O’Brien, Scott Miley, and Taraneh Dohmer. But there is a hope that this will grow in the next few years, as this highlights what is going on in the gaming community- even if it does appear to be mostly indie developers at this time.
Paige Marincak, one of the volunteers involved, spoke as to why Ottawa Games was created. “Ottawa is a city brimming with talent and a love for games. There are so many people here who are working on interesting and cool projects – from the artistic to the grand to the unusual. We wanted to create a space to help bring their work to larger audiences, to showcase all the amazing events occurring in the community, and to provide resources for those who wish to get involved.”
Mathieu O’Brien, another of the volunteers, added to this, saying: “When people think of games in Canada, they think Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. We wanted to showcase the amazing talent that is coming out of the capital as well.”
It does appear that there are some indie studios and developers in the area, and they should not be overlooked.
For those that are interested in the Ottawa Games events (currently there are Dirty Rectangles, Game Jams, and various other events planned) or just in Ottawa Games in general, it can be found on their site, or on their Twitter.
