Microsoft Buying Studios to Reach More Communities

Satya Nadella Wants to Expand Microsoft’s Reach

According to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Microsoft isn’t done making acquisitions after recently purchasing ZeniMax Media for $7.5 billion. Nadellaclaimed during a recent interview that making all of these acquisitions for Xbox Game Studios is to reach more communities of people. Nadella mentioned that content is just an ingredient to the platform and that it goes beyond just developing the content people want. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is one way that Microsoft spread the content they make across Xbox, PC, and most recently, mobile.

“We’ll always look for places where there is that commonality of purpose, mission, and culture,” said Satya Nadella. “You can’t wake up one day and say, ‘Let me build a game studio… The idea of having content is so we can reach larger communities… Content is just the incredible ingredient to our platform that we continue to invest in… This doubles the size of our creative organization.” While Microsoft intends on letting ZeniMax, Bethesda, id Software, etc. do their own thing after the recent acquisition, other studios may have a more hands-on approach.

While Todd Howard and original Bethesda founder Christopher Weaver both share an interest in the recent Microsoft acquisition of ZeniMax Media, we’ll continue to wonder what studios Microsoft is looking to purchase until they say they’re done. The recent acquisition spells good news for Game Pass as future Bethesda, id Software, and more titles from ZeniMax media will make their way to the subscription service. Considering the purchase of ZeniMax Media set Microsoft back $7.5 billion, we aren’t expecting too many huge acquisitions in the near future.
