Difficulty Spikes
If you’re going to take on Marvel’s Avengers, you better bring your A-game. Only thing is, you’re not going to know when you’ll need it. Even on medium settings with an adequate power level, missions will break you if you’re not paying attention. I’m not going to lie and say it isn’t frustrating when you cruise through the first 90% of a level like it’s nothing, only to find the final room was designed by Satan himself. I haven’t touched the highest difficulty, but I can only imagine what it’s like.
Repetitiveness
If there’s to be any hope of longevity for Marvel’s Avengers, Crystal Dynamics will seriously need to think about sprucing up the mission structure. Every level plays out the same way. Go here, smash that, defeat those enemies. Rinse and repeat. And I might be able to deal with that if it wasn’t for the unbearably bland enemy designs. Also, the character dialogue that plays on repeat as you progress is like nails on a chalkboard. How invested will players remain if it feels like you’re doing the same thing, over and over again?Â
The Camera
I’ve dealt with some difficult cameras in my life, but battling with the one in Marvel’s Avengers has been a sincere test of patience. Most levels will have you working through tight corridors. Combine this with waves of enemies and a camera that seemingly has a mind of its own, and you have a recipe for disaster. It’s baffling that getting smoked by off-screen enemies would make it through playtesting. How could anyone, in good conscience, let this happen? Regardless, if a patch isn’t on the way, Marvel’s Avengers could be dead in the water.
