Phil Spencer Talks Xbox Series X Exclusivity
During a recent interview, Phil Spencer went into detail on why Xbox Series X releases won’t initially be exclusive to the next-gen console. Many of the titles coming out for the Xbox Series X will also be available on the Xbox One, with Smart Delivery bringing the titles that are optimized for Series X to the next-gen owners. Phil Spencer claims that the goal is to put the control in the hands of players so that they can game how and where they want to. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate brings the extensive Game Pass lineup to Xbox One and PC and Project xCloud will be added to service this September at no additional cost.
“The work will be in making sure we put controls into the hands of the players,” said Phil Spencer. “So if you’re running this game on an Xbox One, is frame rate important to you? Is visual fidelity important to you? Let’s give you those options. And I think we are going to see more of that, where we will be able to bring some of our experience of developing for PC to bear.” With Project xCloud coming to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate soon, it’s no surprise that Phil Spencer continues to emphasize player freedom. As long as gamers are playing Xbox, Microsoft apparently doesn’t care whether it’s on the Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC or mobile.
“Frankly, held back is a meme that gets created by people who are too caught up in device competition,” said Phil Spencer. “I just look at Windows. It’s almost certain if the developer is building a Windows version of their game, then the most powerful and highest fidelity version is the PC version.” Phil Spencer is apparently confirming the best place to play Xbox exclusives is the PC if people are strictly interested in visuals, but many console gamers also don’t like the idea of constantly improving their PC to play the latest Xbox titles. Phil Spencer and Microsoft are giving Xbox fans the freedom to choose where they want to play and the Xbox Series X just continues that theme into next-gen.
