Phil Spencer Confirms Scalebound Is Dead

Phil Spencer Destroys the Hopes of Scalebound Dreamers

While Scalebound was canceled back in 2017, fans remained hopeful that PlatinumGames and/or Microsoft would end up reviving the grandiose concept. PlatinumGames recently spoke in an interview to explain that they’re still interested in the IP but Phil Spencer recently spoke on the IGN Unlocked podcast to lay the rumors, hopes and dreams to rest. Microsoft isn’t working on the platform exclusive title and last time they checked with PlatinumGames, they weren’t either and Phil Spencer isn’t necessarily proud that it was canceled. Scalebound was intended to be one of the flagship Xbox exclusives and it likely would’ve been an essential Game Pass experience similar to Sea of Thieves and Gears 5.

Microsoft PlatinumGames Scalebound

When speaking on the IGN Unlocked podcast about Scalebound specifically, Phil Spencer said, ““We’re not working on it. I’m not at Platinum today, but I’m almost positive they’re not working on it. It’s something we all moved past.” PlatinumGames recently confirmed that the intellectual property of Scalebound 100% belongs to Microsoft so Phil Spencer confirming the title isn’t being developed means that it won’t be coming to current-gen despite the early hype for it. During the podcast, Phil Spencer confirmed he was working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic and that he’s working with the ESA to still do a digital showcase for E3 2020.

“It’s not a moment that I see as a high point for me in my role, having to cancel a game that we had talked about for years,” continued Phil Spencer. “But yeah, for the people out there who are kind of thinking that maybe there’s something still in the works, there’s not.” While we were extremely pumped for the early footage of Scalebound, our dreams of a potential future release that increased with PlatinumGames speaking highly of the title are now diminished entirely.
