A Permanent Collection
Video games as an art form are becoming more and more recognized. Today marks an occasion of huge significance to an important entry in the ongoing story of video games. 11 Bit Studios has announced the next achievement in its efforts to create meaningful entertainment. Today The Museum of Modern Art announced the Studios’ best-selling antiwar game, This War of Mine, is being entered into a permanent collection.
Of course, the collection is focusing on the experience of video games. Titled, “Never Alone: Video Games and Other Interactive Design”, the collection is on view from July 16th, 2023. For those unaware, The game, follows a civilians story in wartime. Importantly, the game is brutal and poetic, not shying away from the true horror of war.
Paul Galloway, Collection Specialist, Department of Architecture and Design at MoMA explains that ““Never Alone seeks to help us understand video games as various parts, different tools, and techniques that designers bring to bear to shape our experience with games.”
This War of Mine was acquired by the MoMA in 2012 alongside 35 other video games. Of course, all of these games are entries in the exhibit. Of course, player can check out a new video for the announcement. Importantly, the video explains the exhibit and the game. So, check out the video below.
Importantly, this is not the first museum This War of Mine is gracing. in September 2022, the game is also a part of the War Games exhibit at the the Imperial War Museum in London. So, will you be trying to see This War of Mine in the MoMA?
