The Witcher: Monster Slayer Arrives With a Powerful Live-Action Launch Trailer

Heard You Wanna Be a Witcher

The Witcher franchise has been taking the world by storm in every medium: there are The Witcher TV, movies, books, and especially video games. Today sees the arrival of a new The Witcher game–the free mobile AR title The Witcher: Monster Slayer, which promises to bring a wide array of monstrous creatures to visceral, terrifying life.

We’ve heard The Witcher: Monster Slayer described as similar to Pokemon Go, and that comparison isn’t entirely unfounded. Both titles are AR games that heavily feature monsters and require players to walk around in real life, but in The Witcher: Monster Slayer, you won’t be befriending or capturing the monsters. Instead, this dark fantasy game will place you in the shoes of a Witcher, a form of magical super soldier, and task you with hunting down and killing the terrifying creatures that haunt this realm.

To celebrate The Witcher: Monster Slayer’s launch, the developers have released a live-action launch trailer that does an excellent job of getting us excited for the game. The video begins with footage of a player riding his bike through a seemingly normal neighborhood, watching grotesque monsters from a distance, while a voiceover explains what a Witcher does… and how dangerous the profession is.

It then introduces a second player, who spots the severed head of a horse–and glowing monster footprints–on the road ahead of her. Afterward, the first player is shown making a purchase from an in-game merchant and brewing a potion while the second player walks through a crowd and her phone turns into a sword. Her destination is a dock, and more importantly, the fish-like creature roaring at her from the water’s edge.

A flame flickers to life in her right hand as she prepares for battle. Meanwhile, the first player has returned to the neighborhood from the beginning of the video and downs a potion before engaging the monsters. His eyes turn gold and slit-pupiled as yet another foe steps out of the shadows and screeches.

Needless to say, this trailer is absolutely incredible and we’re hyped to see what The Witcher: Monster Slayer has in store for us. The game will use advanced AR features, including location and time of day, to allow players to hunt down over 100 different monsters. If you log in before July 28th, 11:59 PM CEST, Android and iOS users will receive the Kaer Morhen Steel Sword. This weapon gives you 10% experience points for killing monsters and will be a valuable aid to new witchers beginning their journey on the Path.

The Witcher: Monster Slayer is now available on iOS and Android.
