Play COVID: The Outbreak at the End of May
With many developers working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Polish developer Jujubee has announced their upcoming game entitled, COVID: The Outbreak. The team has delayed other projects such as Dark Moon, Flashout 3 and Realpolitiks 2 to divert resources to the game centered around the global pandemic affecting everyone right now. The game is set to release at the end of May, with 20% of sales being donated towards the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations. COVID: The Outbreak releases on May 29th for PC, featuring gameplay similar to Pandemic and other titles involving the mass spread of a deadly virus.
“Here at Jujubee we are passionate about educating our audience while they are having a good time playing our games,” said a recent post from Jujubee. “Currently, there is a plethora of misinformation circulating the topic of the coronavirus, so we hope our strategy game will serve as a source of entertainment and education for our players.” The gameplay includes National emergency decrees as the virus spreads, pandemic management and the construction of essential buildings such as emergency tents, research institutions, checkpoints, police stations and, of course, hospitals.
With the lack of a cure or vaccine to COVID-19, it’s kind of messed up that a developer is creating a game centred around the deadly virus, with misinformation as accessible as correct information. This will be part of the gameplay as Jujubee is taking into account all of the people who choose to do the opposite of what they’re told. Although games such as Pandemic and Plague Inc. have existed for years, it’s interesting to see COVID: The Outbreak releasing during the pandemic.
