Blizzard Wants to Tell a Bigger Story with Diablo IV
During a recent interview, Diablo IV Game Director Luis Barriga and Art Director John Mueller discussed details about the upcoming Diablo sequel, including the potential of multiple expansions. They mention many classic and new characters which can have expansions and perhaps future titles based around them. They consider Diablo IV like the first chapter of a bigger story to tell, despite the fact that it’s the fourth installment. Diablo IV doesn’t have a release date currently but it’s in development for PC, PS4 and Xbox One, suggesting a 2020 or early 2021 release.
“Once we saw the art we were inspired, (Lilith) was a character that we could build a story around,” said Luis Barriga. “What we love about Sanctuary is that we’ve already planted these seeds. There’s a rich backstory found in novels and lore books, so we decided to look closer at the creation myth… It also changes up the formula.” Diablo IV intends to change things up by taking time away from played out characters such as the titular demon, Malthael, etc. and their change in art direction is certainly a thing of nightmares in the best sense.
““Diablo IV is like the first chapter of a book,” said John Mueller. “We want to tell a big story and we want to tell it, hopefully, for a very long time. Treating this like the first chapter of a book and Lilith as a key character in this story, it feels great knowing that there are still all these other characters that could come back in the future. Or, new characters that we haven’t seen before.” We’re looking forward to seeing what Blizzard keeps from former games and what they’ve thought of for the latest Diablo sequel.
Do you think Diablo IV will be receiving several expansions, or just the usual singular add-on experience before moving on to Diablo V? Which character from previous Diablo titles would you like to see make it into this sequel? Let us know in the comments below!
