Cologne, Germany Will Be the Home of a New Epic Games Studio

Former Factor 5 co-founder Julian Eggbrecht and CEO, Technical Director and co-founder Achim Moller have kept busy with other ventures since Factor 5 went dormant before the Epic Games studio in Cologne. Eggbrecht will be behind an Epic Games group that covers multiple locations such as Cologne, Germany and Marin County, California while Achim Moller will be the Director of the new Cologne studio.

Though the former Factor 5 developers are far from working on their next project, their previous projects include Lair and the Rogue Squadron games on the Nintendo 64 and GameCube. Since Lair flopped, Julian Eggbrecht video-on-demand services and cloud technologies at Hulu while Achim Moller joined Eggbrecht to launch SmoothVOD and running a tech development studio called FactorY Media Production GmbH. The two join hands once again in Epic Games’ efforts to expand their companies’ European presence. Their experience with media production surely contributed to their role’s at Epic Games where they’ll be able to put that passion to good use as Epic Games intends to focus on the emerging streaming and interactive media technologies. “Germany is a nation at the forefront of technology and we look forward to extending our local presence as we fill newly created roles and hire exceptional talent,” said Eggbrecht in a statement, hinting at a future Cologne job boom with Epic Games.

Lair may have been technically impressive but no Factor 5 game is as fun as the Rogue Squadron games to us. Despite facing some challenges after the closure of Factor 5’s US branch, it’s comforting to see Moller and Eggbrecht finding their feet with Epic Games. What do you hope to see from the former Factor 5 developers now that they’re with Epic Games at the new Cologne, Germany studio? What are your favorite Epic games so far?
