You Want a No Man’s Sky Refund? Go Pound Salt!
There is no question many are unhappy with No Man’s Sky. It’s simply not the game many wanted it to be. Over the past weekend, reports surfaced of gamers who received refunds from retailers like Amazon, Steam, and PSN. The reports claim the retailers offered unconditional or nearly unconditional refunds. Well, stop the press as that is not entirely true.
No Man’s Sky refunds became all the buzz this weekend on social media, NeoGAF, and Reddit. Many users began recounting their success stories. Some former No Man’s Sky owners reported that they’d managed to squeeze cash from Amazon, Steam, and PSN despite set-in-stone refund policies. This lead to widespread reports and everyone running to the customer service line hoping to get some cash back.
Some of the Steam users who reported getting some money back claimed the store had waived policies like the 14-day maximum amount of time since purchase. Users were passing around tips to other users such as citing technical issues and asking to speak to a live chat representative instead of sending an email. This would be to get around the typical refund policies. Sneaky bastards!
Some users were blatantly suggesting they played over 30 or even 50-hours or so with the game and still got a refund. Shahid Kamal Ahmad, a former Sony director who helped secure PlayStation’s No Man’s Sky exclusive, went so far as to say, “If you’re getting a refund after playing a game for 50 hours you’re a thief.” He added, “We’re not talking about a consumer product in the factory sense. We’re talking about a work of art. You can’t just treat it like a widget.”
You have to admit, he has a point. If you’ve logged in over 30-hours with the game this suggests you probably like it and have no business getting a refund.
In response to these reports, Steam added an orange framed disclaimer to No Man’s Sky’s page: “The standard Steam refund policy applies to No Man’s Sky. There are no special exemptions available. Click here for more detail on the Steam refund policy.”
Sony and Amazon have yet to add any official disclaimer but we highly doubt they’ll offer refunds to those who have already logged in a serious amount of time with the game.
What do you think of this fiasco? Should you be allowed to get a refund after you’ve played a game for over 30-hours or so? Do you have any refund stories?
