How to Beat Garm in God of War Ragnarök

How to Slay Garm

The epic battle with Garm is a highlight of God of War Ragnarök. His screen-filling size and aggressive attacks make this a difficult encounter. So if you’re sick of being a chew toy and want to slay the beast then follow the tips below.

Stage One

Stay back for the entire fight. If you run in, it is harder to avoid area-based attacks and you’ll likely die pretty quickly. If you hang at the back of the arena, you’ll get plenty of time to avoid the ice pulse by double tapping X.

His next attack is a big bite which will inflict a lot of damage. You cannot defend against this so you’ll have to roll out of the way. Immediately following the attack is a second bite which is blockable. Either time the strike with a parry to stun Garm or evade and counter with your weapon. This will knock the creature down and give you the opportunity to unleash a barrage of hits to whittle down his health bar down.

Stage Two

In this section, you need to follow the same pattern as the first but he will also use chain attacks. You need to roll out of the way of these until he does a powerful strike where his chain gets stuck in the ice. At this point, freeze the chain with a throw of your Leviathan Axe then interact with it to perform an awesome cinematic QTS.

You’re Not Done Yet

While it may seem like the fight is over, there’s still more. First, you are chased out of the area and at one point Garm blocks your path. Throw your spear at the golden cuffs to proceed. Continue until you reach your final encounter with Garm.

Equip your spear and stay back. The gold cuffs and bracelet are your target. Launch your spear at these and avoid his similar attack pattern. A simple way to do this is to aim and throw five spears then detonate them which will inflict a large amount of damage. He will eventually fall and you can damage him further. Continue this cycle and you’ll soon slay the beast!
