Become a God of the Battlefield
God of War Ragnarök features one of the greatest combat systems to date. Santa Monica wonderfully captures the impact of each swing which adds an intense brutality to fights. While you can lower the difficulty to breeze through the game, why not up it and master the art to feel truly like the God of War? If you want to dominate on the battlefield then read on to find out how.
Weapon of Choice
Enemies have different weaknesses which you can take advantage of. Some take additional damage with fire, so grab the Blades of Chaos, tap triangle to whip it around and engulf it in flames then attack. This is the same for those who have a weakness to ice. Switch to the Leviathan Axe, tap triangle, then annihilate your foes.
Combos
As you progress, you’ll unlock a number of combinations so you can be more expressive in fights, however, there are still plenty of options at the beginning of your journey. The approaching strike is key and ensuring you get the upper hand with a devastating strong attack will help you eviscerate all who step on the battlefield. Holding R2 will unleash a furious blast which opens up a juggle opportunity that you can take advantage of by repeatedly tapping R1. Finding a sequence that suits your playstyle is important so experiment but maybe start with this.
Switch it up!
Switching your weapons is extremely important as this will help you take down e enemies quickly. With just a tap of your d-pad, you can shift from your axe to the blades. So if things are not going your way, alter your approach. Try using range attacks and Atreus to fight from a distance and then jump in for the final blow.
Get out of the way!
Reading the visual clues is imperative to becoming adept at combat. Colored circles appear before a vicious strike to indicate whether or not these can be blocked. If not, a perfectly timed roll can open up a countering possibility so you can inflict a devastating attack. Don’t get too close. Learn attack patterns and the distance of these before you move in to strike. If you choose the Dauntless Shield, nailing the timing of parries is key. Not only is it ridiculously satisfying but it also staggers your opponent so you can quickly defeat them. The Stone Wall Shield can soak in attacks and retaliate with a blast, whichever you choose, learn its properties to excel in battle.
Be the Executioner
After you have kicked the crap out of your opponent, they will enter a stagger state. This gives you a portion of time to execute them in a typical Kratos style. Not only do they include a slick sequence, but this also helps to reduce the number of enemies which lessens the chance to get overwhelmed. Observe your enemies, plan who to tackle and then wreak havoc.
