The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from March 2022

The Bad

Ashwalkers: A Survival Journey

Ashwalkers: A Survival Journey is a survival game, based on resource management, which can be addicting, but the new Switch port has crippling issues. It’s a slow experience. Even its framerate often runs at 15-20 FPS. The controls can be surprisingly unresponsive. Our reviewer called Ashwalkers: A Survival Journey “a chill, but engaging experience”. It’s just an experience better had on PC.

Babylon’s Fall

Babylon’s Fall is the first major disappointment of 2022, and the lowest reviewed game on our Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from March 2022 article. Both Square-Enix and PlatinumGames have made plenty of classic action RPGs, but Babylon’s Fall is ugly and boring. The combat is quite deep and engaging, but the mission structures are repetitive, and lacking creativity. On paper, the game sounded great in terms of world and story, but the entire experience gets marred by multiple currencies and battle passes. Our reviewer called Babylon’s Fall “directionless, cluttered and convoluted”. It’s been received so poorly that the developers have publicly reached out to fans for suggestions: a bad omen.

Sam & Max: This Time It’s Virtual

Sam & Max: This Time It’s Virtual keeps its presentation formula so retro that we are wondering why it was translated to VR. The original games in the Sam & Max series were PC point-and-click adventures, where the player would be rewarded with comedy videos for completing puzzles. This stop and go gameplay formula might have worked if the VR controls weren’t so clunky. Our reviewer wrote “the bugs, awkward control scheme, janky controls, and the long periods of sitting through Sam and Max dialogs place a limit on the audience for this game”. The only real reason to play is that the comedy writing truly captures what made the original games so beloved.
