6 – Resident Evil 4
The fourth instalment of the Resident Evil series was my all time favourite due to the overhaul of the controls. No more clunky walking and shooting mechanics, this one plays like an action-survival horror but this time the zombies were villagers infected with a parasite that rendered them into a blood thirsty mob with pitchforks and torches. At night their heads would sprout a giant tentacle creature that snaps at you, kind of an odd direction for the series but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The story was about the US government sending Leon Kennedy, a survivor of the Raccoon City fiasco to investigate the whereabouts of the Presidents daughter who winds up being kidnapped by an evil cult. The enemies were creepy and intimidating, more so the boss fights like the giant mutated salamander “Del Lago” attacking your boat or facing off against the giant ogre “El Gigante”, these were among my favourite boss battles in video games. 5 – Plants Vs. Zombies
Popcap Games created this outrageously addictive strategy game that features a rag-tag team of plants who can use their gifts from nature to combat the undead. PvZ is structured like a tower defence game but what makes it so much fun are the various strategies you develop to take those blasted zombies down. Plant sunflowers to collect sun energy which you use to build new turrets and blockades. Using potato shields to fend off attacking zombies while your pea shooting plant barrages them. Later on, you unlock more allies with different abilities. The game was every bit funny as it was ridiculous, new levels began with a note from “the zombies” trying their best to taunt you despite their lack of brains. Leaving messages such as “Ok, you win. No more eating brains for us. We just want to make music video with you now —Sincerely, Zombies” Crazy Dave brought even more laughs brandishing a cooking pot on his head. Crazy Dave eats a magic taco, travels back in time to eat it again but accidentally goes back to ancient Egypt. This is the kind of laughs to expect when you play this. There’s no doubt PvZ is hilarious, charming and worth every penny. Not only that it has been so popular that it spawned one of the most charming shooter games ever made in the Garden Warfare series. Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 recently launched and it’s a great way to enjoy the PvZ characters even more.
