Silent Hill: Townfall Makes You Feel Vulnerable Again

Feeling Vulnerable

In 1999, Silent Hill terrified audiences with its twisted psychological approach to horror. As the genre progressed, forefathers experimented with new scares and added action elements, broadening its appeal. While Resident Evil had enormous success with RE4, Silent Hill struggled to capture the same balance with titles like Homecoming. Although recent releases like SHf carefully tread the line, Townfall goes back to making you feel vulnerable again.

Fear From Your Perspective

Switching to a first-person perspective helps to enhance the horror. Not only does it anchor you within the world, but it also allows the environment to tell a tale, which helps to build tension. Seeing remnants of civilisation in the abandoned town and unsettling sounds echoing in the distance increases the immersion and builds tension.

Creeping Behind Cover

Enemies are dangerous and due to this, stealth is often the best way forward. As the game is packed with tightly designed areas, you must navigate the maze-like environments to avoid the sightline of creatures. The heart-racing scenarios highlight your vulnerability, keeping anxiety levels high.

The CRTV Creates Tension

Your CRTV is an essential item. As you must locate threats, you continually switch between the handheld device and what’s in front of you to reach your objective. Due to your attention being split between two aspects, you are constantly in a state of alert, making each moment tense.

Silent St. Amelia

The feeling of dread instantly sets in the minute you set foot in St. Amelia. Thick fog and industrial decline create an overwhelming sense of isolation, making your exploration of the region unsettling and uncomfortable. With only a physical map to work out routes, panic begins to swell as you try to navigate the twisted streets.

What I Can Find

You never feel equipped to take on enemies. At times you may pick up a plank of wood or a pipe to fend off creatures. Even when you pick up a gun, ammo is scarce, and shooting alerts anyone in the vicinity. Due to this, staying hidden is often the best course of action.

Silent Hill: Townfall goes back to the franchise’s roots, making you feel vulnerable, heightening the horror in the process. The oppressive setting and limited means of defence add to the constant feeling that something terrible is waiting just out of sight.
