St. Amelia Is Intense
The location is vital to any horror title. Resident Evil needed the mansion as much as Alan Wake needed Bright Falls. While Silent Hill has primarily been set in Maine, SHf and now Townfall move completely out of America. The latter is set in a fictional town on the coast of Scotland and is quite possibly one of the most unsettling locations in the genre.
A Decaying Town
Signs that this was once a thriving small community are evident. From bunting on shopfronts and handmade signs telling visitors of local goods, the small details make the place feel like it was once alive. Now abandoned, each weathered exterior feels even creepier, making each careful step a descent into the unknown.
Unwelcome
The thick fog and harsh red lighting make the environment feel alive. Dead ends and blocked paths make you reliant on your physical map, making navigation a source of tension. With its tight, interconnected streets housing creatures, it truly feels like the world is a beast itself.
Tell Me a Story
Each abandoned house and note in offices tells a story about the struggles and tragic past. Rather than lengthy exposition, you steadily gather information to gain a broader picture of events from what you find in the environment and what you learn is terrifying.
A Darker Secret
While St. Amelia appears to be a typical coastal area, there’s more beneath the surface. From relatable living rooms to nightmarish industrial areas, each environment is packed with detail, telling you more about the place or amplifying the sense of unease that hangs over every step of your journey.
The greatest horror locations are characters in their own right. From Raccoon City to the USG Ishimura, each remains memorable due to how they helped to shape the experience. St. Amelia deserves to stand beside them due to its incredible environmental storytelling and suffocating atmosphere, which is a driving force in Townfall’s horror.
