COGconnected’s E3 2018 Video Game Awards
With an exhausted sigh, E3 2018 has come to a close. This year saw the rebirth of classics, the continued story of epic tales, and the first steps in brand new worlds. Everybody walked away with sore feet and a twinkle in their eye having seen something truly magical as the gaming community came together. On our last legs with our time winding down, Paul Sullivan and Trevor Houston took a moment to talk about E3 and COGconnected’s awards at this year’s show. With some truly phenomenal showings and unbelievable content, here are COGconnected’s E3 2018 Awards. Enjoy.
Best Pixel Art – Children of Morta
From the studio that brought us Frostpunk and Moonlighter, Children of Morta may be pixels, but its animations are incredibly smooth. Playing as a rogue-like that isn’t quite a rogue-like, the depth and beauty this game brings while entirely staying within this retro art style is astounding. Even at first glance, we can tell this is a game to be watched closely, and everyone who got their hands on it couldn’t speak any higher about its presentation and overall feel.
Best Indie – Tunic
Those at home who had a glimpse of it during the Xbox conference were robbed of a good look at a fantastic indie. Tunic has that classic Legend of Zelda feel with a unique presentation that is lifelike and fills you with awe. This was yet another great entry from Xbox this year and we were thoroughly impressed with everything Tunic had to offer. In a sea of big announcements, don’t let Tunic pass you by.
Best Sports Game – Madden 19
The sports genre was thinly represented this year but the entry which stood out the most had to be the latest Madden. The game took everything from the previous entry and built upon it, with returning features like interactive touchdown celebrations, new online features, and a revamped version of the acclaimed Longshot mode. This was a great example of taking what worked and just making it better.
Best Racing Game – Forza Horizon 4
As soon as the trailer started during the Xbox conference there was electricity felt by everyone watching. Whether you love racing games or could not care less, Forza Horizon 4 – the latest entry in an already spectacular franchise – stole the show hands down. No other racer could compete with the crisp, mint graphics, the all-new dynamic weather, and perfect controls the Forza series is synonymous with.
Best PR Crew – Xbox
Without PR, we wouldn’t have access to all these exceptional games, and in turn the opportunity to showcase them to you from a critical perspective. The PR team is an essential part of our connection to developers in setting up appointments and meetings, keeping things moving, and putting their products best foot forward. This year Xbox’s team was on a roll and could not be stopped. They were kind, efficient, and tirelessly made sure everybody was happy. They made the Xbox presentation that much better and we can’t thank them enough.
