Super Mario 3D World (Wii U)

COG Review Score: 98

From beginning to end Super Mario 3D World is a whirlwind of clever level design, beautiful and vibrant visuals, insane four player co-op action, and extremely entertaining platforming gameplay. The newly added power-ups are a welcome addition and the Cat Suit is sure to be a fan favourite for years to come. There is no doubt that this is the best game available on the Wii U system to date, and in my opinion it may just be the best game in Super Mario history. Make no ‘ifs’ ‘ands’ or ‘buts’ about it, Super Mario 3D World is a must buy as it is the game Wii U owners have been waiting for.

Pokémon X/Y (3DS)

Well, with just the right mix of nostalgia and new features, as well as beautiful, colourful graphics, and a very impressive online experience, Pokémon X and Y both offer a refreshing change to the much loved series that both newcomers and long time fans can appreciate, and these games are one of the best titles available for the 3DS system to date. It is a must own for any 3DS owner.

Mario Party: Island Tour (3DS)

COG Review Score: 79

Mario Party: Island Tour does what it does very well. It freshens up what the words Mario Party mean in a creative and amusing way by shortening and remixing the board game experience. Instead of one game, you can play two or three in the same amount of time, but in that process it feels like you cycle through content a lot faster, leaving you wanting more than what’s available. It has a basic collectibles system, and a limited number of modes too. That being said, where Island Tour really shines is where it truly matters most, the games themselves. Simplistic and easy to pick up, the pure fun that results make this a great game for people of all ages and gamers of all skill levels. Even with a few minor hiccups along the way, Mario Party Island Tour is destined to be a 3DS group favorite for years to come, no doubt.

Knack (PS4)

COG Review Score: 72

Even though Knack isn’t bringing anything revolutionary to the platforming experience it’s still a game that deserves to be played. It showcases some of the PS4’s new graphical muscle and is a blast to play. No matter how linear or repetitive the levels are you’ll still enjoy taking everything in. Knack manages to be magical regardless of its weaknesses and personally I hope the little relic monster gets another chance to shine in a future title.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, PC)

COG Review Score: 86

With two enormous franchise names coming together in one expansive and extremely satisfying title, I think it’s safe to say that LEGO and Marvel has brought us a game that doesn’t come by often and shouldn’t be missed. With its main story and “Free Play” mode, open world aspect, and large roster of characters, it is definitely made for a wide range of players. Whether old or young, comic book fan or not, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes proves to be a game for everyone and an excellent addition to the LEGO game franchise.

Skylanders: SWAP Force (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii, Wii U, 3DS, PC)

COG Review Scores: Wii U – 90/Wii – 88/3DS – 78/Xbox One – 90

(Wii U Review) Skylanders SWAP Force is a great game, especially when you consider it’s a title that is really geared for kids, but adults will be hooked as well. Activision and Vicarious Visions could have just used last year’s game engine, added a new story and released it as a new game, but they didn’t. They have taken the existing franchise, added a new twist (swappable characters), upped the visuals and sound, and made a game that is better than those before it. Add to this that the value of being able to use existing figurines that gamers already own and you have a game that supports returning fans. After playing this game alone, and with my children, as a parent I can easily recommend it, as it is a title that the whole family can play over and over again while having lots of fun.

Disney Infinity (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, Wii U, 3DS)

When I first started to play Disney Infinity I had some fairly mixed emotions about how I felt, but the longer I played the more I enjoyed it and came to the realization that it is a good game.  Sure, there are some technical bugs now and then, the Play Set missions can be mundane at times, and it may be expensive to ‘buy-it-all-to-collect-it-all’ giving you a bit of “sticker price shock”, but in the end how can one not enjoy what is offered here.  The ability to create your own Disney-esque world in the Toy Box is truly amazing, the figurines are very well done, and the thought of future Play Sets is exciting (HELLO…Star Wars, Marvel, or classic Disney worlds).  You can rest assured if you are a Disney fan, or have kids who are, you’ll all enjoy this game, as for you others out there, it can’t hurt to try it as you may just like it too.

Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon  (3DS)

COG Review Score: 90

I didn’t really get much into the original Luigi’s Mansion so I was unsure what to expect for a handheld sequel, but I came away pleasantly surprised with the high level of visual detail, fun gameplay mechanics, amount of replayability, and inclusion of an entertaining multiplayer. Luigi’s solo adventure may be on a handheld this time around but his adventure is in no way lessened because of it; even if he is clumsy and startled easily.

LEGO City Undercover  (Wii U)

COG Review Score: 95

LEGO City Undercover was definitely worth the wait even with the extensive load times that are the only disappointing feature of this game. Everything from the tried and true LEGO gameplay sprinkled with some great new additions, a comedic script, and an entertaining storyline provides a gaming experience suitable for all ages which, in my eyes, makes LEGO City Undercover a must buy for fans of the LEGO franchise and Wii U owners alike.
