3 Up, 3 Down December 2016 Edition
December is usually a slower month for big game releases. Sure, you might see a couple AAA games at the beginning of the month but more often than not the mad rush tapers off by the time December rolls around. This is generally the time of the year when most gaming sites do their Game of the Year Awards and pump out enough Top 10 lists to make your head spin. By the time December drops, most of us gaming journalists are exhausted, burnt right out and some are just about ready to call it quits. Those of us who stick it out, usually re-charge over the holiday season and get ready for what is going to be an amazing year. Before we look ahead to 2017, let’s take a look at the best (3 Up) and worst games (3 Down) from the past month as we put 2016 in the books.
The Best
The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series – A New Frontier: Ep. 1 & 2
It’s unfortunate this game won’t make any ‘best of the year’ lists because it arrived so late in the year but maybe it should. Granted, this Telltale game is more of the same. A New Frontier is largely as linear as before and there isn’t any new core-gameplay to speak of, outside of walking and talking to people. But what it does, it does superbly. If you love a great story and have enjoyed previous Telltale games, The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series – A New Frontier is a no-brainer purchase.

Final Fantasy XV
Yes, this game was released at the tail end of November; however, we received our review copy later and went live with our review early December. So guess what kids, we are considering FFXV a December release for the purpose of this article. Regardless, it is a safe to say that Final Fantasy XV is a must own for FF fans and even those who love a good old fashion JRPG. Final Fantasy XV does a wonderful job honoring past Final Fantasy games and brings the series into the contemporary gaming culture. Though a few small things hinder the title from absolute greatness, Final Fantasy XV remains one of the best JRPGs we have played in recent memory.

Lara Croft GO
This one comes as a huge surprise to our staff. Honestly, we didn’t expect much here. There is no question you should not go in expecting a deep story with massive set pieces like most recent Tomb Raider titles; however, Lara Croft GO is beautiful to look at, has thought-provoking puzzles, and most importantly, is super fun to play. Lara Croft GO isn’t the best game you’ll play this holiday season but it certainly worthy of a hard look.
