5 Basic Dark Souls 3 Tips For Beginners

5 Essential Dark Souls 3 Tips For Newcomers to the Series

Dark Souls 3 is the final chapter of the Souls series, and is getting high praise. When we reviewed the game earlier this month we gave it a superb score. While I strongly urge anyone interested to go try the other titles first, many of you will decide to jump straight into this final chapter. Here are a few Dark Souls 3 tips for any beginners that can’t quite grasp why they’re dying so much.

Dark Souls 3

1. Use a Shield and Keep It Held Up

Shields block attacks. Seems obvious, right? Well unfortunately, a shield will block nothing if it’s not held up and ready to stop incoming attacks. While running around new environments, keep your shield held high to severely lower the amount of times a surprise or trap will kill you. On top of that, try to find a shield with a high or 100% physical block. While other defenses are important, the most common attacks in this series are at least partially physical. If you really want to feel safe, grab enough strength and vitality to use a great shield.

2. Stop and Watch

It is always OK to stop and watch how enemies behave. This includes bosses! If you’re having trouble against anything in particular, just keep your shield up and take your time learning attack patterns. The Souls series isn’t really hard, it’s just unforgiving. As soon as you can learn when to block, when to roll, and when to run the hell away, this game will become a whole lot easier.

3. Swap Equipment to Suit Your Environment

Not only will enemies try to kill you, but several environments will as well. Whether it’s a poisonous swamp or fiery lava, you can always use armour to help mitigate damage. Don’t be afraid to make full gear swaps before bosses as well, particularly magic users. You won’t stop a ton of damage from getting through, but more often than not you can prevent enough so that you will take three hits before dying instead of two. Or poison will build up a bit slower, allowing you to make it from island to island without taking extra damage.
