The 3 Best and 3 Worst Video Games From July 2020

The Worst

NASCAR Heat 5

It seems like most racing games get better with age. The Forza franchise has come a long way and F1 continues to make strides year after year. The same cannot be said for the NASCAR Heat franchise. This year is yet another disappointing installment for the franchise and unfortunately makes our worst of the month list. In his review, Lou said: “Heat 5 doesn’t offer much more than Heat 4. NASCAR Racing is not for everyone, and compared to other sim racers out there, this is easily the tamest of them all. The game does nothing badly, but neither does it excel at anything. It’s truly a middle of the road racing sim. Hardcore fans are the only ones that will want to suit up for this iteration.”

Destroy All Humans

I’ll just leave this here: “I can still close my eyes and transport myself to my childhood. The sights, the smells, Juwanna Mann, it’s all there – But no longer is Destroy All Humans. Was it always this bad? Or was the original merely a product of its time, having no business in the year 2020? Either way, this remaster has been the sort of letdown that’s made me reconsider if anything from my childhood was as good as I remember. Atrocious character models, excessively repetitive missions, framerate drops, pop-in issues, and an overbearing sense of monotony and boredom cursed my time with Destroy All Humans. You did it, Crypto. You destroyed this human.” Need we say more?

In Death: Unchained

Rounding out our list is a VR game. James was pretty excited to finally get his hands on an Oculus Quest, but I think playing this game made him regret it. James said this in his review: “I won’t sugarcoat things: I hated playing this game. But I recognize that part of my constant misery was due to the roguelite elements corralling gameplay into certain styles and rhythms. In Death: Unchained asks a lot of you, in terms of practice, patience, and persistence. When it comes to roguelites, I am mostly sapped of these things. But that doesn’t apply to everybody! You may hear my dire warnings as a clarion call, a war cry demanding your full attention. The lack of progression between runs, the unforgiving aiming system, and the complex controls all proved an insurmountable barrier. Hardier souls than myself are welcome to scale this mountain, but be warned: the ascent is a treacherous one. Download In Death: Unchained if you’re not afraid of a little suffering and strife mixed in with your satisfaction.”
