Get Back Into the Groove With Rift of the Necrodancer

Tales From the Riftkeeper

If Footloose has taught us anything, it is that no problem can’t be overcome with music and dance. Brace yourself, Brace Yourself Games is back with a new rhythm game. Rift of the Necrodancer is both a follow-up to and departure from their previous rhythm games.

Crypt of the Necrodancer and Cadence of Hyrule were both 2D action games with rhythm mechanics. Players would move spaces and attack enemies, but were rewarded for keeping with the beat. The new game’s rhythm mechanics are more traditional.

The trailer shows rhythm used in ways very different from Crypt of the Necrodancer. Its Steam page also lays out the different gameplay modes that the game will be utilizing. There will be Rift Mode, Boss Battles, and Mini Games. Rift Mode looks kind of like a Guitar Hero track, but there are monsters instead of notes.

The Boss Battles are pretty self-explanatory. These appear to be one-on-one fights, where Cadence will have to use the boss’s positioning and movements to determine when the best time to strike will be. The Mini Games are rhythm-based activities. These games will have players helping Cadence fit in with modern day life.

Brace Yourself Games was at PAX East this past week, where fans got to try out the new game. Their booth held a high score contest with different Necrodancer prizes. Unfortunately, Rift of the Necrodancer does not yet have a release date, but it will be coming out on PC.
