Who Left Aerith Alone With Sephiroth For So Long?
When we think Final Fantasy VII, a lot of things come to mind: the Golden Saucer, Moogles, the massive dystopian ruin of Midgar, the Turks loitering in a bar instead of fighting the party, the Lifestream coiling over the Planet, Cloud’s sword, Tifa, how annoyed we are that Barret doesn’t have his limp in Remake, etc. However, if we really had to pick just one thing–and we weren’t allowed to fall back on that one scene where Sephiroth impales the hell out of Cloud in Advent Children–we would pick the part where Sephiroth jumps down and murders a praying Aerith. Yeah, we spoiled one of the first major twists in a game that came out in 1997, deal with it. You need some background to understand why we’re so upset about Aerith’s mocap actress in Final Fantasy VII Remake tweeting about how she just finished a 4-hour long shoot with Sephiroth’s mocap actor.

Who let this happen? Why is it happening? Are they really planning to kill Aerith off so soon? That is a possibility, especially given how Remake‘s first episode ended with the implication that any future deaths will be permanent, but it doesn’t sit quite right with us. Square Enix has gone out of their way to present Aerith as a major shaker in this retelling of the classic game, to the point of putting her up against fate itself. That’s a powerful image for one of gaming’s most memorable ladies. We don’t think they’re going to trash it by retreading old ground so soon. But that opens up the question of what Sephiroth and Aerith are going to be getting up to together that required so much filming. According to translations, actress Asuka Yoshikawa reported that the staff praised both actors, so it may be a very heavy scene. Worrying.
FF7R Aerith’s mocap actress did a 4 hour shoot w/ Sephiroth’s mocap actor. She writes:
“I finished a 4hr shoot w/ Sephiroth’s motion actor yesterday! The staff praised us! I’ll be working today too.
Thanks for your Christmas messages + gifts. I enjoyed them in between shoots.” pic.twitter.com/LYCkd2A5Hm

One thing is for certain: Tetsuya Nomura, Remake‘s director, is also the guy who suggested they kill Aerith off in the original game. This means that Aerith is not safe. As long as her fate is up in the air, we’ll all be waiting with bated breath. We’re sure many of you have spent years wanting to save Aerith, and believe us, we know the feeling. But still, we have to wonder… what if defying fate itself to keep Aerith alive is the wrong decision? Would Nomura really be that mean?
Who are we kidding, this is the guy behind Kingdom Hearts. He absolutely would.
