Includes Steelbook*
For the past forever, sprinkles and pockets of video game influencers and fans have predicted the transition of video games from a physical medium to an entirely digital one. While digital downloads are getting more and more efficient and more and more accessible, we are no closer to actually phasing out physical games. While there is going to be digital-only option for PS5 at launch, there are still a ton of players who are not yet ready to let go of their discs. However, Ubisoft is now also taking a step towards disc-less-ness. Say that ten times, fast.
Ubisoft has issued a warning to Xbox One customers that Collector’s Editions of their games will no longer be shipped with a disc. Instead, there will be digital download keys. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Watchdogs: Legion, and Far Cry 6 are specifically named as such games. They also specifically say that PS4 owners who buy Collector’s Editions of these games will get physical copies of the game. In all three of these games’ cases, the Collector’s Editions all come with an exclusive steelbook*. Though if the Xbox One versions still come with these steelbooks, they won’t be able to hold anything, unless maybe you buy a separate physical copy.
In the message from Ubisoft, there is not really an explanation for this change. Maybe there will be a more complete statement in the coming days or weeks. Watchdogs: Legion comes out on October 29th, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla comes out on November 17th, and Far Cry 6 comes out on February 18th, all for PC, Stadia, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4, and PS5.
